The last ten years Kazan was on the peak of its development and success. Kazan was the host city for the 2013 World Summer Universiade, in 2015 for the World Aquatics Championships. In 2018 Kazan will host the FIFA World Cup, in 2019 WorldSkill Competition. Thereby Kazan patented the “Sport Capital of Russia” and “The third Capital of Russia” brands. It is accompanied by major renovations of the city infrastructure, increasing the quality of life for residents. After several years of great success and rapid development, how to sustain the results and continue the line in terms of economic stagnation and changing external policies?
The Republic of Tatarstan with its capital in Kazan has a special status, which allows to establish independent economic and diplomatic ties with the outside world. Many years the Republic put efforts to promote its image and find new external diplomatic and economic connections, to attract foreign investors. Multireligional and multicultural component of the Republic plays notable role. For instance, due to centuries of Islamic influence from Turkey the Republic of Tatarstan still has up to 26% of foreign investments from Turkey.
In the beginning of 2014 the Russian Federation started the isolation policy with different sanctions and severance of diplomatic relations. On this basis two questions are emerged:
- What is the best strategy for the republican and city’s government in order to save the important for local cultures and religions domestic and external relations?
- How to sustain the reached international image, investment interest, which are important for further economic and social development of the Republic of Tatarstan and Kazan?
There is no doubt, that next decade will be more challenging. Low oil prices, tense international situation will be big barriers on the way of further development. In these circumstances government, religious and political figures must be diplomatic and creative. In the worst case of international isolation, radical movements could rise, that disrupts the fragile social balance.
That is why during the period until 2025 one of the most important task will be finding new balance between interests of the Republic of Tatarstan as a part of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tatarstan on the international stage. The Republic of Tatarstan, Kazan, their authorities and people have to find new points of growth to be successful in future.
